Hi, now we're going to make some sounds on the tuba, we meaning Kevin's going to make some sounds on the tuba. An instrument that big just frightens me, it' so big it looks like it's going to eat my head! Kevin, can you show us how you make sounds to start with out of your mouthpiece and maybe I can assist you on my mouthpiece? This is called "buzzing the mouthpiece". You buzz your lips together. I tell little guys, little kids, to make a buzzy bee sound and you can make it just like right here if you can get in on my lips. Now on tuba and trombone there's more open obiter, it's more like a kiss. A trumpet is more tight and closed. And here's how it sounds when you put it on a mouthpiece. Sounds pretty fun! This is also a good way to practice because you have to use more air. When you play into the tuba some of the air bounces back and supports you, when you play through the mouthpiece only it doesn't, it's open. So we'll talk about breathing in just a second.
