Components of a Basic Drum Kit

Alright before we get started let's go over the basic elements that are in a drum kit, pertaining to what kind of style you want to play. I play the rock style so we are going to talk about what kind of kit I have. Your basic setup is you will have a snare which is right here, it is usually right in the middle of your setup. Then you are going to have your rap toms. In a basic kit, in a basic five piece you are going to have your first rack which is tuned higher than your second rack. Then your second rack is tuned lower than the first but is higher than your floor tom. The floor tom is going to be your lowest tuned tom out of the three. Then of course in every drum set you are going to have a kick drum, some are bigger than others. Mine is just a standard nothing special. Then your brass you are going to have a high hat usually and usually you are going to have crash cymbals. Some people often have splashes and other things like that, and I do have splashes, but they are not set up right now. This is because they are kind of hard to tear down and put back up. When we are gigging a lot and it's just a lot of work, so we just have the basic setup right now. So you have two crashes and a live cymbal just like a high hat and you keep a steady beat on it for time. Then below here if you can see you have the kick pedal, which controls the base drum. I have a double kick because it is more of a rock style, so you can add a lot more kicks and make your beat a lot more complex and add certain things to certain songs. So just an overview of a regular drum set you have a snare you have your rack one and two toms, you got a floor tom, a high hat, ride, and then you got your crashes. You also have splashes which are just smaller cymbals, just for more accents and things like that and there all sorts of different brass. For right now we are just covering the basic drum kits.
