Tuning Slides of Baritone Horn

Our next part and a very important part of these new modern instruments are the valves. Now, as I've said before the valves open and close channels in the tubing which allow the instruments to play the notes. On this instrument there are three valves; as in the trumpet. Some instruments there are more than three valves. Some tubas have four valves. Some trumpets; I don't know if you can zoom in on that little picture, but that trumpet has four valves. That's a piccolo trumpet. They make instruments to serve certain purposes in the orchestra and in different bands. The baritones serve the purpose in orchestras when trombones couldn't be used or they the wanted a rounder sound. As the history goes these valve instruments became very popular because people could switch instruments quickly. I could play trumpet thusly and then go over to the baritone and say oh, I need to play the baritone. Same scale, same notes, but much different sound. The way you get this sound; I'll show you the valves they are very interesting. There are holes in these valves. The holes open and close certain corresponding holes that are in the instrument. That is how notes are created. A combination of pressing the valves and changing the pressure on your lips will change the pitch and tone of the instrument and you can make different notes. Notes in scales, scales are families of notes; that's the key to playing music is knowing your scales.
