Shading Circles for Beginning Drawing: Part 1
Hi! My name is Peggy Robertson and on behalf of expertvillage.com, I am going to show you how to shade a circle, so let us get right to it. I have already drawn a plain circle. Now over here I have what is called a sphere because it is three-dimensional. This is flat, this is three-dimensional. Here is the shadow here that makes it three-dimensional. So I am going to really quickly just kind of draw that line in, try and keep with the shape of the ball, you notice it cuts it off, it does not follow totally round, so you cut it like this and it starts right at the bottom and you bring it up to the top, like this. You also notice that there is a highlight here, so what we will do with the highlight is we will use our eraser to lift it off, but right now we are going to do this shadowing because that takes the longest time. We are going to run around following the shape of a circle. We are going to fill this in, because it is all pretty dark. We are going to follow the line of the circle. Now you don’t worry if you go over the line of the circle because you could clean up later with the eraser. It picks it up really nice and gives you good line. Right now we have got to color all this in because we are in short-time schedule. Now I will show you as much as possible in a short time. Already this has started to get a three-dimensional shape to it. Now you notice that there is a lighter spot down here too that is the reflection of the paper, so we want to pick that up too as soon as we get this end dark enough. I am going to go to a 6B because it will give me darker faster. Of course, the pencil is dirty so it is smearing like crazy. Okay now like I said you can just take this and erase this entire extra and you can get back your circle line. Now we also have to fill in the rest of this. We can actually steal from that, get some of that in. We are going to have to put some in our selves with another pencil because it is not enough. So are just going to have to bring this down and circle is right about here where the light is, so we just color in around the side and then we are going to smear the edges in and I am going on circle because this is round, it is not a flat surface and I am going to have to smudge these edges a little bit more because they are too much of a depth in that line.
