Heartworm Prevention for Dogs & Puppies

Hi my name is Sarah and my name is Haley and we are two of the technicians here at Extra Care Animal Hospital and on behalf of Expert Village.com we are going to speak with you today a little bit about the care of your dog. Right now what I am going to talk about is heart worm prevention. Heart worm prevention is something you want to start from the time over 2 pounds or 8 weeks old for the rest of their life. It is basically a once a month thing and it is one of the healthier things that you can do for your dog. Heart worm is carried through one infected mosquito so one mosquito can give your dog heart worms. A lot of times with the heart worm prevention they also carry intestinal parasite prevention. Those two can be a nasty combination. Heart worm unfortunately can be fatal. It is literally like a worm that goes through their heart and destroys both their bowels and the way it performs. So we want to make sure that he is on heart worm prevention once a month, every month for the rest of their life. The added benefit to having your dog on heart worm prevention is that they are on intestinal parasite prevention. Hook worms, whip worms and round worms are intestinal parasite’s that can cause blood in the stool, severe diarrhea and uncomfortable-ness for your dog. You want to make sure your dog is on heart worm prevention once a month, every month for the rest of their life. There are a lot of different options. You want to stick to a veterinary approved product but there are several different choices you can make. Like I said that is about it for the heart worm prevention but remember only one infected mosquito can give your dog heart worms and the rest of the intestinal parasites can be found in the grass, on the floor or your children’s hands so you want to make sure they are on that prevention. It is a great thing to take care of and prevent for your dog. That is about it.
