What is a Mandolin?

Hi! I am Michael Oberst for Expertvillage.com and I am a mandolin instructor. Today in our first lesson we are going to be talking a little bit about the mandolin. The mandolin is a small string instrument with eight strings in four pairs, which are plucked with a pick. The most common tuning for mandolin would be E, A, D and G starting from the smaller string to the larger string. Similar to the tuning of a violin and in truth there aren’t too many differences between the mandolin and a violin except for the fact that mandolin has frets and the body style is different.
