A transfer of Copyright is when the original author or composer, transfers the right of the copyrights to a different author or owner. This requires a written contract with signatures from the original author and it is recorded in the U.S. Copyright Office. You need to use the form P.A. or S.R. which is a sound recording form in order to do this. The transfer of rights gives the owner the rights to license the use of the Copyright. This is not the same as licenses. Licenses allow people to use the Copyrighted material. This is a transfer of ownership, so it transfers the ownership of the material, it does not just allow use. A license is given to those who want to use the use of the material. Licenses are authorized by the owners for music sold via: cd's, cassettes or to be used in shows or the internet. Composers get paid in royalties for licenses and this is how they make money from the Copyrighted material. Here's an example of a license.
