Reading Marks & Tracking Black Bears
We are Nick and Valerie Wisniewski on behalf of expertvillage.com. We would like to show you some black bear sign and if you need more information, check our website at walnuthilltracking.com. If you are wondering if you have bears in your area, a good way to find out is to check the utility poles in the back woods. We've come to one such utility pole, way out in the middle of no where and we’ve found several signs that black bears are living here. Bears for some reason are attracted to these poles and we will talk more about that in the future but Valerie is showing you a bear claw mark. You can see 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 claw marks that was left by a bear which intentionally clawed this tree and to the left of that is a bear bite where the bear sunk in to two canine teeth; one from the top jaw and one from the lower and bit. You will see the fibers are pulled in towards each other and there is an explosion of wood outwards as it releases. Also on this same pole are some bear hairs which you can see here. These have been here a while and have already started to bleach out. They would have been black when they were left. They’ll turn brown and ultimately almost a whitish color.
