The term "iron" in somewhat inaccurate. Quilters shouldn't "scoot" an iron because it can distort cotton fabrics. Quilters should "press" fabric using an up and down motion.

Attaching Quilt Borders
Hi! I am Shelly Cordsen here with Expert Village.com. We now have our first side borders on and one of the other things I want to emphasize to you is ironing. It is so critical to iron and in this quilt, we will iron the same out; always away from the center on every border. So you just kind of come through and just pull and hold. You really want to make sure you get those nice and flat. So when you sew your next border on, you are getting it nice and even and I will set and just kind of scoot it. Then I like it to flip it over and make sure that I have not creased anything that does not need to be creased. So now we have a nice flat to work with. Now we are going to work on the other side border which is actually our top and bottom. Again if you will remember we go through the center, take our top border, press here and the bottom one, same thing. Then take your ruler and always go down the middle. That kind of is the average of what your quilt should be. Cut that one, then you are going to cut this one and again pin beginning and middle and sew and you’ll do the same. You are going to continue this with all your other borders. However with your next border, you are going to find you only, sorry you will have four separate ones again, so it just cross the mid sides, middle and away you go.
