How to Care for Your Dog's Teeth

Hi my name is Sarah and my name is Haley and we are two of the technicians here at Extra Care Animal Hospital and on behalf of Expert Village.com, we are going to speak with you today a little bit about the care of your dog. All right what I am going to talk about is dental care. It is probably the number one thing that most clients are unaware of on how important it really is. Dental care starts the first day you get your puppy. Even though they always have baby teeth when you generally get them as a puppy, what you want to start doing now is brush their teeth from day one. It helps build the tolerance in getting their teeth brushed now and it helps keep their adult teeth clean as they come in. When you brush your dog’s teeth, you want to make sure you are getting the back teeth. You go up to the side of the mouth and you basically lift the lips and go all the way on the back. You want to focus on the back teeth. A lot of times you can have pearly whites in the front and then they can have a ton of tartar buildup in the back. Dogs get dental disease just like humans. It is called periodontal disease. It is plaque buildup, tartar buildup and gingivitis. It can eventually down the road be the cause of heart disease and lung disease and it can be fatal in some cases. An abscess of the mouth can actually go through sinus and take out your dog’s vision and actually take away one of their eyes. So I tell people if you start brushing from day one they will not only get used to having your hands in their mouth but will also get used to getting their teeth brushed. It kind of works hand in hand. Say they grab something toxic, they are used to having their teeth brushed you can grab whatever it is out of their mouth. Just focus on the back teeth, don’t worry about the inside of their teeth and you want to do it once a day. If once a day is too much for the teeth brushing, they also have chews which are available. They also have a rinse that you can rinse in their mouth once a day to where you just squeeze it on both sides and the enzymes actually interact with the saliva to get around killing the bacteria for 24 hours. It is crucial that you take care of your dogs teeth. It is one of the number one things you can do and it will be less expensive in the future on dentals and just health overall will be much better if you take care of your dogs teeth. That is about it for the dental care. If you are interested in getting more information about our animal hospital you can visit our website at www.extracareanimalhospital.net.
