How to Adjust a Bicycles Wrong Drive Train

Often times when people are complaining of poor shifting, they will refer to something called skipping. There are two kinds of skipping; one kind of skipping is due to maladjusted dérailleur, the chain is jumping around from gear to gear in the back onto the slightest load on the pedals. The other kind of skipping is due to wrong drive train, where literally the chain is lifting up and over the teeth on either the free wheeler cassette on the back or the chain rings in the front but the chain is so worn, the cassette or free wheeler is so worn the cassette is literally jumping forward and missing teeth as it tries to engage. A very quick way to ascertain whether your chain is stretched out and your chain rings or cassette are worn, visually pretty much without tools is to shift it up onto the big ring or the bigger of the two or three rings that your bike might be set up with and go to the front and if you can do this where you see the chain is just kind of flopping around against the teeth and you can expose a good amount of the tooth on a chain ring it usually means that it is worn. We look carefully at this inner chain ring and start to see some of the profile of these teeth are looking a little bit more like a shark fin than more of a straight cut up and down of this outer ring, that is also indicating this chain ring is fairly worn. Often Hybrids and mountain bikes that have been used a lot, the middle of these three rings is worn out, the chain is worn out and the cluster of cogs in the back is worn out. So no amount of adjustments of dérailleur will make that bike shift cleanly or behave well especially under load. And by under load I mean when a lot of people are putting pressure on the pedals trying to climb up a hill and the pedals suddenly skip forward. This is a problem, it should really be addressed as it can be hazardous.
