Basic First Aid: Checking a Conscious Victim
Hi everyone, I’m Amy, and I’m here today for Expert Village to talk about checking on someone who appears to be seriously ill, and it is good to do just a general head to toe examination to determine whether or not you indeed need to call 911 or the paramedics. First thing you want to do is you want to introduce yourself. “Hi, my name is Amy. You don’t appear to be feeling well. May I help you?” It is always important to have their consent granted to you. Each state has its own good Samaritan laws, but one of the most important things to remember is they have to say it is okay to help them out. “Do you take any medications? Do you have any illnesses?” “No.” “When did you last eat or drink anything?” “An hour ago.” “Okay. So you don’t have any existing medical conditions?” You can always check for medical or identification bracelets if they are unable to answer. It is good to check them for feeling warmth and color. “Does anything hurt?” “Yeah.” If they are just barely conscious, groggy or confused and unable to respond at that point, you absolutely want to call 911.
