Basic First Aid: Basic Victim Assistance & First Aid
Hi, I’m Amy, and today we are going to be talking about check, call and care. Here are the three steps you want to take when you come upon a victim that is unknown to you, and you are not sure of the injuries, and you are also not sure as to whether or not you should enter the scene to insure your own safety. The first thing you want to do is check the scene around you. You want to make sure that there are no down electrical wires, no hazards that could possibly injure you in your attempt to assist the victim. Once you have secured the scene, you can go ahead and approach the victim. It is good to gently tap and shout, “Are you okay?”, “are you okay?” In terms of checking the victim, you want to make sure that they are breathing and they have a pulse. Sometimes in the position you find the victim, it is difficult to tell whether or not they are breathing or whether or not they have a pulse. If you find that you need to roll the victim over, there are some general rules you should follow when you roll people over onto their back. The first thing you want to be very careful to protect the head, neck and spine. So you want to make sure you cradle their head before you roll them over. You then take a hold of their head and roll them towards you, not away from you.
