How to Drill Shelf Holes for Upright Bookshelf

Hi! This is Jon on behalf of Expert Village. In this video clip, we will be drilling for our shelves. When you drill for your shelves, there is a couple of things you need to be real careful of. One we are going to be drilling into our project and we don't want to drill through the other side. So what I've done is put the drill bit through my story pole, I'm going to set my pin next to it so that I can get the proper depth to drill. Then I went ahead and placed a piece of tape right at that point so that I know only to drill through until I meet the tape. Now when you do this, you want to be real careful because if you hit the tape or you put that tape into the hole, it is going to slowly move that tape up and your hole is going to get deeper and deeper. Now before you start drilling, you want to make sure you clamp your story pole in place or to hold it securely. Now you will notice that my story pole is flush with the front edge. My story pole is 3 inches wide but my holes are drilled in the center which is a 1 1/2 in. Now since the holes are in the center, I can place this at any point, front, back, right, left side on my project and it is always going to be drilled about an 1 1/2 in. You also want to verify that the top of your story pole is at the top of your project. Now when you get ready to drill your second set of holes, you want to make sure that there is no debris that you are sitting your story pole on. Otherwise your holes are going to be off and your shelf is going to be crooked.
