How to Make Story Pole for Upright Bookshelf

Hi! My name is Jon on behalf of Expert Village. In this video clip, we will be creating a story pole. Since my bookshelves are going to have adjustable shelves in them, I need to drill a series of holes so that I know where I can put my shelves at. Since we need the holes to be drilled exactly the same on both sides so that our shelves sit level, we need to create a story pole which is a guide for drilling those holes. I started by cutting out this 3 inch wide piece scrap plywood. Now it is cut to just under 6 feet so that it will cut inside my bookshelf. First we need to find the center of the board all the way along the length of it. You always want to make sure that you identify which side is the top because if you flip them around, your shelves are going to sit crooked. Next we are going to put a mark every 2 inches to signify where each hole is going to go. After that we need to drill a hole on each of those marks and this is going to go all the way through. When finished, we will have all of our holes drilled precisely at where each shelf could potentially go.
