Hi! My name is Shaun Appler and I am an investigator with the Wrightsville Beach Police Department and on behalf of Expert Village, I am here to talk to you today about how to deal with an aggressive driver. Now, an unfortunate situation if an aggressive driver does cause an accident with you, first make sure that you are okay. Make sure that all the occupants of the vehicle are okay and call 911 or star 777 if you are in North Carolina. Treat it like any other accident. Make sure you have your insurance, driver's license, registration with you when the officer gets there. If you are in the roadway and it is a serious accident, go ahead and stay right where you are at. Now you are creating more of a traffic hazard by staying in the roadway. Ask 911 dispatcher if it is okay for you to pull off the side of the road if your car is drivable. If a car hits you and drives away, a hit and run. Again, don't get aggressive with the driver but you do need to get as much information as possible because when you do file a report with law enforcement, you do need as much information as possible. That includes the plate number; especially the plate number and the color of the vehicle and what the driver looked like. It is important that you get a good look at the driver especially in a hit and run place as all of us know, mom and dad could register the vehicle and it could be the son or daughter driving the car. Other people could be borrowing the vehicle. So you want to make sure you get a look at who it is. Get their race, approximate age, sex, kind of what they look like if you can. It may also help you later down the road in identifying then especially if this goes to court. The officers need as much information that you can provide them. License plate, color of the vehicle, make and all that good stuff. So just try to get as much information as possible especially if they drive away.
