Hi! My name is Shaun Appler, Investigator with the Wrightsville Beach Police Department. On behalf of Expert Village, I'm here to talk to you today about what to do when you are being stopped by the police. Now, while the officer is approaching, and while the officer is talking to you, remember one thing: keep your hands where the officer can see them. Remember what I said earlier, the officer's mindset is that he wants to go home safe at the end of his shift. Alright, he probably has a family, people that he loves, people that he wants to go home and see. He doesn't know you any more than you know him. And the thing is, is that he wants to make sure that he's not going to be hurt. If you keep your hands where...whether or not you have a weapon in the car, if you keep your hands where the officer can see them, he's going to feel a whole lot more comfortable talking to you. If you start reaching underneath the seat, behind the seat, behind your back, typically that's the places where a weapon is concealed, so then the officer is going to be nervous and the officer may draw his weapon. Alright, so make sure you keep your hands where the officer can see them. Another little point I'm going to tell you is if you are dumb enough to be riding around with contraband laying on your seat, don't go and try to hide it. Alright, the officers are trained to see that while they're stopping you and while they're walking up to the car. It's going to make the officer nervous because you may be trying to hide a weapon. It's going to create a whole lot more problems for you. If you are not smart enough to be riding around with the stuff riding on your seat, chances are, you've been caught. Just go ahead and be honest with the officer.
