Rewinding 16mm Films

Hi! I’m Grady Johnson with Karma Train Productions and today I’m discussing 16 mm films and I’m representing Expert Village.com. Wow! It was a great movie, I really enjoyed it. Now we got to rewind the film and that is very, very important that every time you view a film on 16 mm projector, that it is properly rewound. This is important because when the film comes through it’s actually winding at the wrong way. If you try to run this film, it’s not going to go into the projector correctly. So to do this you push this button right here, next to the back arm and pop that into place. Once we have that up there, you take this and thread it on through and pop it into your front reel again. Go ahead and put that in, just like you did when you threaded it the other time and give it a loop or two. Go ahead and put this in the reverse position. You don’t need reverse projector at this point, just reverse, pop that into reverse. Once it starts to turn a little bit, that’s when you want to go ahead and put the speed on. Now right up here on the right, there is a button you can push. It will actually speed up the rewind and I’m going to push that right now, and you see that it’s doing that right there. That button is directly next to the framer button. The framer button is used when the thing is out of frame and you have to pop it into place. This button is going to be used a lot more, you will hardly ever use the framer button, so you’ll get very, very comfortable with using that particular button. Once you’ve done that and it starts to rewind, let it rewind all the way and remember when this is running, you don’t want to wander off somewhere and go to another task, strike your screen or get too busy doing something else. You do need to kind of focus especially on a short film, how quickly this is going, so it is using up the entire film and getting completely rewound before you start another one. Okay, we are going to go ahead and let this rewind and then once that’s fully rewound, we’ll go ahead and start our next film. Okay, now it’s rewound, simply turn the machine off, grab your films, take that out, and go ahead and grab the film you want to work with next. That’s how you rewind a film and it’s something you need to do every single time you watch a 16 mm film.
