Moving an Exterior Wall During Home Remodeling
If moving walls is in your plan, there are several things to consider. You want to consider what is in the wall. Is there electric in the wall? Is there plumbing in the wall? Where is it? Where can you move it? Can you take it out? What would be the steps to take it out? And also, is the wall a supporting wall? This area is a perfect example of a wall that we moved. This area right here was a back porch. This was a cement porch and we made it into an entry alcove. This low hanging area is the space of what was the back porch. This right here was the exterior wall. What we did, because this was an exterior wall and a supporting wall, in order to remove that, was my husband put three 2x12s together to make a supporting beam and then he put that beam across where the wall was supporting the house and put it in beam pockets that he made in this wall and in this wall. We added that beam before we sheetrocked it and taped and floated it. Moving walls is no small feat. If it’s a supporting wall especially, you will need either a very good professional home builder, or you may even have to consult an engineer or an architect.
