How to Establish a Budget for Political Campaigns

Hi, this is Jim Goettler on behalf of Expert Village. This is a video series about managing a political campaign. This segment I'm going to touch on the development of a budget very briefly. A budget can either apply to a campaign for a candidate or a campaign for an initiative. The big ticket items, if you will, and these will have to be discussed with either your candidate or with the group of people who are planning an initiative. When you put that budget together, you're going to have four or five items which are going to be the big items. One is going to be staff. You're going to have to; you'll probably wind up paying some people to provide some services to you for the campaign. The other big ones are printing. If you're doing a ballot initiative, you need to print those ballots and you need to distribute those ballots. If you're doing a candidate, you're going to have an awful lot of material that will have to be printed and it all costs money. The other big expenses are going to be phone and general communication. You're going to run up a phone bill so be prepared for those kind of items. After that it goes in what's called the great miscellaneous thing which includes things like travel and miscellaneous expenses. Traveling even across the state for a statewide campaign will run you a lot of money. You need to budget in travel. If you're working at a local level, in a city or county, travel won't be as important but you should and need to keep track of it. It will add up because public appearances and so forth will cost money. So keep those things in mind. Since we're on the topic of money, the next segment I'm going to touch on is one of the more interesting ways to raise money, especially for a smaller campaign or a lower profile campaign and that is making use of the house party as a fund raising tool. Thanks.
