How to Choose a Finance Officer for Political Campaigns
Hi, this is Jim Goettler on behalf of Expert Village. This is a video series about managing a political campaign. This segment I just want to touch on the important need for any campaign to have a financial compliance officer or someone whose only role in the campaign is to track the money. For a local, city, county office, it can often be your treasurer. The treasurer needs to be someone, doesn't need to be a CPA particularly, but does need to be someone who is willing to be publicly responsible for how your money is spent. You've often seen posters, I'm sure, campaign literature and posters as well, will have the poster of the campaign was sponsored by so and so committee, so and so treasurer. It' often a legal requirement that the treasurer be a publicly known person and willing to put their name on the proverbial dotted line. While the public at large is going to be looking at policy statements and speeches and whether or not they have a pretty family and a nice dog, the actual legal requirements for a campaign often come down to money and it's very important that the person responsible for the money understands the legal process, all of the legal details for a campaign, and again, I'm talking mostly at the state, city and county level, is very easily accessible information. There are no secrets involved. It's a matter of careful record keeping. Keeping track of all of your campaign limits, what you can bring in and likewise what you can spend and simple, honest bookkeeping. It's not rocket science but people have made it so, unfortunately. In the next segment, I'm going to touch on building and developing a basic budget for a campaign. Again, a campaign, this would apply to either a candidate campaign or initiative effort anywhere in the country and I thank you.
