Polaris 500 Front Final Drive Maintenance Tips

On behalf of Expert Village my name is Tom Roland and we are with Cottonwood Motor Sports and I am here to tell you about service on a Polaris Quad and this is a fairly representative of macho, many of them. Also while you are under here, you are going to be changing out the front final drive. There is a drain plug for it and a hole in the bottom of the frame. You pull the drain plug out right here on the bottom and then up at the top in the front there is a filler plug right here and you put your correct oil back in here. On these units, this is what is called a centralized Hilliard. That means that the electric control for the 4 wheel drive is inside this final drive and because of that it takes a special oil. It takes a thin oil. If you put the wrong oil in it, it won't necessarily destroy anything but it will cause the front differential to self-activate the 4 wheel drive when it's not suppose to and also when you are checking that you want to make sure what the oil looks like when you take it out so you can see if it had water in it or whatever. We commonly find discolored oil. It usually is white or milky or creamy looking and it indicates that there has been water in the front. The oil for the Polaris for the final drive they call it demand drive fluid. It is for hubs on the older Polaris'. The hub had oil in them and the 4 wheel drive operation was in the hub and on the newer ones, it is all controlled inside the front gear case and they call it the centralized Hilliard clutches on the new ones. This is a correct oil for it and it is standard. It is about a 10 weight oil and is synthetic also and it is something that is really important on the new ones to make sure that the correct oil is put into these units.
