How to Replace the Air Filter on a Polaris ATV

On behalf of Expert Village, my name is Tom Roland and we are at Cottonwood Motor Sports and I am here to tell you about doing service on a Polaris Quad and this is fairly representative of macho, many of them. On the Polaris', on almost all the units, the air filter is under the seat. This is an X-2 and it has a little dump bed on the back and you just lift up the dump bed on it and you pull the seat off, set it aside and you are careful not to drop it on the floor because you can split the upholstery on it. You flip the clips on it, pull the lid off the air box and then with a screwdriver, all you have to do is take a screwdriver and undo the clamp and the air filter comes right out. It has a pre-filter on it and the pre-filter is a real fine mesh and that mesh covers the paper element and the paper element is not supposed to ever be washed. It is always supposed to be dry. If it gets water on it or gets oil on it, it is no good anymore. It has to be thrown away. If it is just dirt and it's not real bad, you can take it and kind of tap it on the floor a little bit to get some of the heavy off and then you can blow it on the inside to get the fine dust and stuff off it and then you can use it again. The outside pre-screen, you can take the pre-screen off and you can wash it in soap and water and you can use it over again. Just let it dry and put it back on again. As far as the air filter is concerned, that is pretty much it. You clean it or replace it. It is very important it affects the gas mileage, they affect how well they run at altitude beside from the fact that an air filter that is not functioning properly either chokes the motor or lets the dirt by and makes it wear out way faster than it ordinarily would. All you have to do is just slide it back on again and tighten the clamp up. The air filter is held in by the clamp and it is also held in by the lid on the air box. The lid on the air box has a piece right here that helps hold it in place so that it can't go anywhere. You just put it back in again. It has this foam piece up here that you stick it through there and you put it all back together again. Then the clips are right here and you get it so that it sits down in its groove really good like it is supposed to. Sometimes you have to fiddle with the clips because they are kind of in the way but get them out of the way and you will feel it. It will sit down and be nice and tight and all you've got to do is flip the clips back up and that is basically an air filter service.
