Hi, I'm Liz Hood on behalf of Expert Village and right now I am going to be talking about certain things that your are going to need to have for your changing area. Now, this is an actual changing table. You don't need to splurge on an actual changing table. What you can do is just buy a changing pad that is kind of raised on both sides like this one is with a safety strap and then put it on top of any sort of low dresser or anything of that nature and that would actually be a far better buy because that child would be able to use that dresser until they leave for college. So, this is a very important thing to have, this changing pad. They do sell changing pad covers. Now, they say to buy two to three so that when one is in the wash you still have at least one clean one. I have found it to be a lot easier for myself to just leave it bare because it is water proof and if urine or anything gets on it and you just wipe it off and you're good to go. You don't have to wash anything and that really helps out a lot. Another thing that you need to have within arms reach is some petroleum jelly and also some sort of diaper rash cream. This is Boudreaux Butt Paste, I found it to work really well. Another good thing to have right within arms reach is diaper wipes. If your baby happens to have very sensitive skin, what you can do is put a thermos of water with in arms reach and then have little cotton pads and use that instead of diaper wipes. I use the non-alcohol diaper wipes, but some babies have very very very sensitive skin and even that would make them red and irritated. Another good thing to have is a small lamp that you can leave on at all hours. This is a very good thing to have because when you have to do a late night diaper change you won't have to turn on the main overhead light and disturb your baby more than they already are. Another thing that you absolutley must have on hand is some sort of locking diaper pail. Now, this is an actual diaper Genie which is nice because the little refills that come in this wrap each dirty diaper up this scented sack thing. However, you need to get a new refill in it every two to three weeks or so and those are about $5.00. So this is not an actual necessary item that you need to have but you need to have at least some sort of locking garbage pail. So if you have a dog, or other kids, or when your baby starts pulling up to stand they can knock it over and get into the dirty diapers. Plus you kind of want to keep that smell contained. If you're willing to get a diaper Genie, this works really well. Another good thing to have is just a nice place to keep your diapers organized. This is a diaper stacker. You don't actually have to buy a diaper stacker, I mean you could easily just stack them up on some sort of shelf near by, but I found this to be really helpful. One last thing to have within arms reach of the changing table is just some sort of hamper. If you have to go ahead and change clothes it's just really good to just be able to just stick their dirty clothes in a nearby spot so you don't have to worry about it and you don't have a big pile of dirty clothes somewhere. Now, if you have noticed every single thing that I have mentioned is within one arms reach of myself. That is a very important thing because even if you happen to have a diaper table strap it's good to keep a hand on the baby at all times. So you keep a hand on the baby when you grab a diaper or grab a wipe, put something into the hamper, you know what have you, always keep a hand on your baby when they are on an elevated surface.
