How to Carve Halloween Pumpkins

Hi this is Shana Bethune and on behalf of Expert Village and I'm going to talk to you about carving your pumpkin. So once you have everything set up and your pumpkin is empty and you have your designed transfer to it. It is finally time to start carving. Start by taking the top off of your pumpkin and putting it out of your ways so that it does not get damaged. Then take a medium size knife and you want to start cutting from the center of the pumpkin and work out so that way you are not if you start from the outside and work in you are going to be holding the outside part of your design which is fragile and you pumpkin could cave in. So start in the center which in my design would be the center of the mouth right here. Cut in slowly and now you can see why it is important to have angles instead of curves and you want to do it piece by piece. You don't have to go around the whole edge just choose chunks that you can cut out easily to start with. Once you have a chunk cut out, you get your knife and push out the piece from the inside. Now continue to cut out squares and actually it is better if you can cut inside your lines so that way you have less to clean off once you finished. For areas that are curved cut a angular piece near it and later you would come back and work on the details. So once you have curved the large blocks out of your pumpkin, clean out the inside a little bit just to get any pieces that are floating around in there out of there. Then you are ready to move on to carving the more detailed parts.
