Define the Bully, the Bystander & the Bullied

Hello, my name is Melisa Schenk and on behalf of Expert Village. Today we're going to talk about how to deal with a bully. In this first clip let's talk about bully basics. Of course you have the bully themselves, the person being bullied, but what about the bystander? Many people forget about bystanders and honestly the bystanders are just as guilty themselves as the person being bullied. If they aren't doing anything, you have to think about the motivation of a bully. Why are they bullying? Well, if it's one on one, it's probably a power struggle or to intimidate that person, but if there are bystanders all around, of course they're trying to maybe impress their friends or make themselves look really good in public. They're not looking good of course but they're trying to impress their friends and look good to their peers perhaps at school. So it's interesting and it's very important to discuss with your children, the bully, the person being bullied but also the bystander. Very, very important. When thinking about the bystander, we have to think also what is the bully's motivation? To impress the bystanders. So, if people around, the bully don't do anything, what is that bully going to continue doing? Picking on the person that he is bullying. So, if you're discussing with your children, very important about being a bystander, what are you going to do? Are you going to do something to help that person being bullied?
