When to Praise your Puppy : Tips for Housebreaking Puppies
Hi, my name is Tracey Tenner and this is Doc. I’m the resident dog trainer and behaviorist here at Extra Care Hospital in Davy, Florida. We are here to talk to you today about how to house train your puppy. Let’s talk for a moment about how to praise and reward your puppy for doing the right thing. When you take your puppy out to go potty, take him or her to the same place all the time. That way they will smell what they done there before and they will know what is expected of them this time. Give them a command in a calm voice. I like to say go potty until your puppy starts to sniff or show a sign that he or she is getting ready to go. As soon as your puppy starts to go it is very important that you praise but praise very quietly. If you over praise your puppy is liable to be interrupted in the middle and stop going before they finished. Those are the puppies that go potty outside and then come back inside and go potty again. So once more, we are going to take our dog out the same door every time and take him or her to the same place every time and we are going to give them a command in a happy voice to go potty, go potty. As soon as your puppy starts to go we are going to praise them very quietly and the moment they are finished, that is when we are going to get all excited and have our party and tell them what a wonderful dog they are.
