Choosing a Crate Size for your Puppy : Tips for Housebreaking Puppies
Hi, my name is Tracey Tenner and this is Doc. I’m the resident dog trainer and behaviorist here at Extra Care Hospital in Davy, Florida. We are here to talk to you today about how to house train your puppy. Okay. The next thing we are going to talk about today is crate training your dog. A crate is really the same thing as a cage. Some of the important things to know are where to locate your cage in the house and also how big the crate should be. When you look for a spot for your crate, it should be in a well traveled area of the house. It is very important that puppies not feel isolated because they truly are members of your family and pack members just like a wolf pack. The next thing to remember is how large or small to make your crate. If your crate is large enough for your dog to go in one corner and use the bathroom and go into another corner to lie down then it is entirely too big and defeats the purpose. Ideally your dog’s crate should be big enough for your dog to stand up, lie down and turn around comfortably; no larger or smaller than that. As your dog becomes better and better at keeping the crate clean, then we can gradually increase the size of the crate.
