Learning To Add Large Numbers

My name is Courtney on behalf of Expert Village and in this clip I'm going to show you a concrete way to teach your kids how to add two and three digit numbers. We're going to use something call base ten blocks, you can actually buy the blocks at any teachers supply store but also you can just do a search on the internet and there's several different sites that have a printable version of the base ten blocks for you to print out. The single squares represent ones, the single strip of squares equals ten, and the large cube of squares equals a hundred. What you can do is give your child an equation like twenty-two plus twenty-four. We're going to make twenty-two with a set of blocks and then you're going to make twenty-four with a set of blocks. Then they will add these together. Putting all their ones together, so then we have forty, one, two, three, four, five, six, forty-six. Now this is really good when we start needing to carry. Twenty-five plus fifteen, so they make twenty-five with a set of blocks and they make fifteen with a set of blocks. Then they add these together, they push these over here and push their ones. Now, when they get to the ones, and they count them up they realize they have ten, and they need to trade these ten in for a full ten like this and so now they know that twenty-five plus fifteen equals forty.
