Playing The Sorting Game

My name is Courtney Hester on behalf of Expert Village and in this clip I'm going to show you an activity you can do with your kids to have them practice sorting by attribute. Sorting by attributes is very important for kids in kindergarten and first grade. If you just have some old buttons or even toys or just something you have kind of a collection of at home you get them together and lay them out and then I'm going to draw three circles on a piece of paper. You can draw four circles or five circles, how many ever you want. The object of this is to see if they can sort all of these objects I've put in front, all of these buttons, into three categories, by attributes. This takes a level of thinking. I'm looking around and I've just noticed that I have three different shapes, so I'm going to first sort these by shape. I'm going to put all of my round buttons in one, and then I have a square button, this one's kind of square, and then I have a star button. So, I've sorted all, I'm going to sort all of these. So, now I've sorted my buttons by the attribute of shape. Then you can challenge your child again, scoop them all in the middle, and sort by a different attribute. You can sort by holes, these have two holes, these have four, and then I have some that have no holes, so we can sort by buttons that have no holes. Again, the challenge is to see if they can get all of their buttons in the three categories they've chosen or that you've helped them choose.
