Teaching a Child to Tread Water When Swimming

Hi, I’m Samantha with Sharks and Minnows Swim School and I want to give you a couple of tips on treading water. Treading water is a great skill to use whether you’re in a pool, an ocean or a lake to keep yourself a float. There’s a couple of different kicks that you can do and you can choose whichever one you feel most comfortable with. The first one is the flutter kick, the flutter kick is an alternating foot motion using one leg at a time, something like this. For treading water you want to put your body in a vertical position so you’re going to put you foot underneath you and kick with one foot at a time. With your arms you want to scull, sculling is just moving your arms back and forth almost like little half circles. So this is treading with flutter kick this is the most strenuous kick to tread water with. You can also use the whip kick, the whip kick is something you would think of like a frog would do. You’re going to bring your leg up, out and around, up, out and around. The reason this kick isn’t used so much is because I’m bobbing like you can see, you’re still sculling with your hands but you’re bringing your feet up, out and around. The most practical kick but kind of the hardest to learn is the rotary kick, the rotary kick you’re going to move your feet in alternating circles. It’s sometimes referred to as the eggbeater kick. You’re still sculling with your hands but you’re moving your feet around in circles, you want to keep your feet flexed and push the water with the inside of your foot. Once you’re comfortable doing this, try lifting your hands out of the water and doing it and then try putting your hands back in and just sculling with your hands and keeping your feet still. These are a couple of the ways you can learn to tread water.
