Training Myth That Well Trained Dogs Do Not Need Leashes

On behalf of Expert Village, I'm Carlos Puentes with K-9 Solutions Dog Training in Miami, Florida, and today we're going to talk about dog training myths from my new book, Who's Training Whom? Okay, my dog has been trained off leash. Therefore, he will listen to me always wherever I take him off leash. Wrong. If it was a robot he would listen to you 100% of the time. You want to make sure if your dog's been trained off leash, and especially if he hasn't been trained off leash, that you have them off leash in an area that's out of the way. Isolated beach, a dog park, your back yard. A dog could listen to you. Let's say, I don't know, let's pick any number. 8 out of 8 times. Then the 9th time for whatever reason he didn't listen to you. Not only didn't he not listen to you, but he got hit by a car or scared a little girl into the street and she got hit by a car. Pretty drastic. It may never happen to you, but it could and then you're not going to be happy with yourself, whoever told you that yes you could take your dog off leash anywhere and he'll always listen to you. That's only in the Lassie movies. When they did it the 5th time in the studio, okay now we got it perfect, let's take it to TV. Even the best trained dogs in the world sometimes won't listen to you when you want them to.
