Train a Dog to Greet Other Dogs

Hi this is Elise McMahon for Expert Village.com and in this video series we are talking about taking your dog for a walk. In this short video clip, we are going to be talking about having two dogs meeting up with each other on a walk. What we would like to see is the dog’s walking politely with the people up to each other and the dog’s pausing either in a sit or a stand until the people can say hi, shake hands, exchange a pleasant greeting and then walk by. What we don’t want to see is the dog dragging the owners up to each other and they are starting a play or fight session. We are going to give it a whirl. We are using Tai and Ursa and we’ll see how it works. Ursa, ready, let’s go. Ursa, wait. Tai, wait. Hi. How are you? Good. Tai, let’s go. Good girl Ursa. We walked up in a controlled manner giving dogs the appropriate hand signals and verbal commands to let the dogs know what we want every step of the way. When you approach, you want to have the dog already under your control so they are walking with you and once you approach, you want to give your dog the appropriate hand signal, verbal signal. Ask them to wait. Ask them to sit or stay whatever your dog does the best while you say hi to the other person. Then when you walk away again you are going to get your dog’s attention on you and you walk out of the situation.
