Tips for Home Schooling High School Students

Hello! My name is Terry Neven. I am the administrator of California Home Educators and the principal of Sunland Christian School. In this clip we are going to talk about home schooling high school students. A lot of times families think high school is a more difficult grade to home school. But in fact if students are self-motivated, have studies skill in place and can be self directed, high school can actually be one of the most wonderful years of teaching a child at home. There is a lot of variety available to high school students. They can work part time jobs during the day when other students are available while they still continue to do their school work. They can also take college courses. If they are college level classes, then they earn double credits; both high school and college credits. Recently we just graduated a 16 year old who earned both her high school diploma and an AA degree from the local community college at the same time. Probably one of the most difficult parts of home schooling a high schooler is sports. In most states, students are not allowed to play sports at local school while being home schooled unless they are home schooled through a public school program. But there are park and rec baseball teams and basketball teams. There are a variety of other ways through the local gym or other opportunities where students can participate through local sports. The high school can actually be a wonderful time to teach your children at home.
