How to Walk a Dog

Hi, this is Elise McMahon for Expert Village.com and we are going to be talking about in a series about walking a dog. If you would like to find out more about my resources, you can contact me at www.canineheadstart.com. So we’ve gone through leashing your dog, passing through a gate, getting your dog in and out of a car and now we are going to start the actual walk finally. That’s what Tai thinks. Watch me. So we are going to start off on the walk and again, I am using a 6 foot leash here for this walk. What I want to do is as I walk forward anytime the dog pulls ahead of me I am going to stop. Really it takes two to pull and if I refuse to move forward when the dog is pulling, then the dog is basically just going to have to stand there until he turns his attention back to me and then I will allow him to go forward again. So we are going to start. Let’s see how he does. Tai, let’s go. As soon as the dog starts to pull again, I am stopping until he gives me his attention back. Yes. Let’s go. Again, when there is tightness on the leash, I am stopping. Okay. Let’s go. Let’s go this way, this way. Good boy. Let’s go. Good boy. What a good puppy. Let’s go. Good boy. What I like to see is the dog walking on a nice loose leash and paying attention to his handler who he is walking with. Good puppy. Want to slap me five? Good job. Let’s try it again. Let’s go. The leash goes tight, I stop. Okay, let’s go. Tai, let’s go this way. Let’s go. Good boy. Good boy. Very good. Good job. And that’s a nice walking manner.
