How to Mulch Perennials

I have a nice Canadian hemlock mulch here that's been double shredded. I like it because it's a natural brown color. It's really good to mulch in all your perennials in the fall. Number one; it protects it from winter injury. Number two; it helps reduce water evaporation, water loss. You want to get a nice good base of it up around the plant and pack it down. Usually about a 2 inch depth would be sufficient to really seal this plant in and take care of it for the winter moths that are coming up. Will help protect the root system as well if there is anything that's exposed around the base. Here again, it really does help keep the plant root system cool and moist.
