Genetic Dental Diseases in Cats
Hi this is Dr. Greg McDonald for Expert Village.com. We are talking today about dental disease in cats and one of the categories that is very important is cats can sometimes have genetic problems that cause them dental problems. In other words the way they have been bred, they have mouth formations of their mouth that can actually lead to dental disease and dental problems. In a normal cat you can see how these teeth interdigitate when they open up they come back and they meet just perfectly. In some cats we have seen where there is a genetic problem where they have been inbreeding and these teeth can come down and hit one another like this where they can actually get over shot like this and then they have actually penetration from the lower canine teeth up into the gum line here. So those things are usually detected very early in a cat at the first dental exam that your doctor does for you and sometimes we can actually have things like braces put on to help with these and sometimes just shortening one of the teeth so that it does not stick into the gum line on the opposite side of the mouth. Again, it is very important that you work with your veterinarian and in some cases veterinarian’s will refer you to a specialist that actually only does veterinary dental care and they can put braces on or readjust the teeth or remove teeth that are in the way and allow other teeth to grow naturally then. So early detection of any genetic disease in the mouth formation of your cat’s teeth should be detected by your veterinary and possibly referred to a dental specialist.
