Pros & Cons of Owning an Art Gallery

Hi, This is Christina Varga from the Varga Gallery in Woodstock, New York and today on behalf of Expert Village we’re going to show you how to open and run your own art gallery. The pros and cons of having your own art gallery; well, the bills are the cons, the pros are meeting all the great artists and having a space that people come to, being part of the community and uh, helping the community and helping the artists, most importantly, showing their work, giving them shows, showcasing uh, things that people might not necessarily get a chance to see, depending on what kind of art you’re doing. It’s difficult to make the bills, it’s very hard and you have to always, always work and sometimes you might also have an exhibit which irks the community, like I did a political exhibit and it had all sorts of things with Iraqi, uranium, depleted uranium, bomb victims, children, blown up arms, very disturbing so a lot of people seemed to boycott my gallery for awhile, didn’t sell very much work for a few months, a lot of people were pissed off because it seemed very pro, uh, pro Muslim and there’s a lot of Jewish people in this community, but I think the most important thing to think about is the uh, unity of all people and not the dis-unity and expressing something like that through an art show is perfectly appropriate and I would like to quote myself and say that arts transcends law, do not worry about it, freedom of expression, that’s my belief, if you have freedom of expression, you have a gallery.
