Type of Background Needed for Starting an Art Gallery

Hi, this is Christina Varga from the Varga Gallery in Woodstock, New York and today on behalf of Expert Village, we’re going to show you how to open and run your own art gallery. So, in keeping with the things that I believe you need in order to have a gallery like Internet access and things like that, my history and my education is based in communications and journalism with a smattering of film. I worked at the New York Times, Mirmax Films, MTV Network, Viacom Media, I focused in my education on learning how to communicate, I think that might be a natural expression of who I am, but communication skills are really, really vital. I have the good fortune of having a very tempestuous eight year career, a stint in New York City where I basically had an immersion in the communications industry, starting with doing PR for the Kennedy’s then going to the New York Times, then going to Mirmax, you know, through the communications industry, until I finally threw my hands up and said “I did not want to do this” and became an artist. Then from becoming an artist, I had the idea that I could have my own place, do my own art in my own place and I left New York City and moved to Woodstock and opened my own place here where the rent is cheaper and the people are sometimes nicer and you don’t have to deal with smog and fog.
