How to Test a Gun After Reassembly
Okay, going in of course with everything I have just pretty much went over. Once my weapon is back to perform a function test you don't necessarily have to go out and fire your weapon. You can do what we call a dry fire which is just as good. It lets you know if your weapon is operating properly. So I just cleaned my weapon, put it back together. At this point a safe direction which is always away from people or animals or anything of value. Never point a weapon at anything. But for training purposes we are in this environment and I have made sure several times and I continue to make sure this weapon is clear and safe so no one will get injured. There is no live ammunition here. What we want to do now is perform a function test. Is I am going to grab my slide and pull it to the rear and let it go home as if it fired a round. From that point I am going to squeeze the trigger until it simulates that I just fired a round. What I will do now is slowly release the trigger until I hear the click at which time it is reset. I will pull the slide to the rear again. Again it is reset and I can pull it. Okay, the trigger is the same every single time there is nothing there that would catch my eye that would lead me to believe that the weapon is not functioning properly. Okay, at this time I will grab my magazine put my magazine in the bottom and give it a nice little you know seat by patting it on the bottom. Okay, Now I will first release the magazine to make sure that that's working properly. Yep, gravity takes hold magazine comes out as it should. So if I am firing my weapon in theory the way semi autos are made once the last round is fired it automatically locks the slide to the rear and that is because the way the magazine is designed. It is designed to catch the slide and hold it to the rear to tell the shooter hey we need more ammo. So that's what happens. Now if I had took the magazine out and slid it to the rear it would go back home. So in this case I have no idea if there is another round in there or if not. Okay, but when you have a magazine in there or if I had a full magazine and I was firing when that slide goes to the rear and locks back, that tells me okay I need to do a magazine change or I am out of rounds. So the functions to perform a function test like we just did everything I have just done ensures me that my weapon is in good working order.
