How to Tune a Drum

Now that we have cleaned and maintained the whole drum, we can actually start to tune it and see how it sounds. So with the top head you are going to want to add a fairly high tension and the thing about this head is not only does it have to sound good, but it has to feel good. So right now it sounds a little low and it feels a little loose. So we will bring it up again using the star pattern starting on the lug closest to the body on the right, across and then over. We'll see how that sounds. A little bit better. Still got a little bit of that tom tom sound so you really want to get that base tone out of there so you get more of a high pitched tone. One more time around. Okay that's pretty good. It feels at a playable level and it sounds still a little low but we will bring it up more once we get the bottom head and we can start working on the overall tuning of the drum.
