Now, when you're playing any sort of passage on the snare drum, there's really 3 different tools you can use. You've got your forearms, your wrists, and your fingers. Now, the use of the forearm. I'm going to use only forearm. Not moving the wrist of the finger at all. Now, I'm going to play only wrist keeping the forearm and the fingers still. Now the same; I'm going to play with only fingers, no wrist or arm. When you play anything you're really going to want to try to use all your tools. It's a matter of what percentage of the note you're going to play with your arm, your wrist, or your fingers. When you're playing say at 15 inches, you're going to use more wrist and more forearm when, say you're playing at maybe at a Mesto piano 3 inch level, mainly all wrist and fingers.
