How to Play French Drum Rolls

Now, we're going to play what's called the French roll, which is like the double stroke roll, but it's 3 beats instead of 2. The double stroke was that, and now the French roll is going to be 3. This is going to come from playing strong triple beats just like with the double stroke roll it was strong double beats. You're really going to want to find a good exercise to exercise your triple beat. A lot of times you can just start in the up position and say for 5 minutes I'm going to play triple beats. You're going to want to use a little bit of the back finger, the wrist, and the arm when you're playing these. There's really 2 approaches you can take. You can start and end in the up position or you can start in a down. It really all depends which approach you're going for.
