Now we are going to learn how to play a good flam and we are going to apply the stroke types that we just learned. So we are going to start with the right bead at 12 inches and the left bead at 3 inches. Now to play a good flam, the left bead should hit the drum head slightly sooner than the right bead. See that was a little too close. Right there is called a double stop. The beads are hitting at exactly the same time. Now you are also not going to want to go to far the other way which is going to be a very wide flam. You are going to want a nice tight sound where they are almost hitting together which is getting that nice flam sound. Now what you also want to avoid that is common is called the mouth which is really just flam spelled backwards. You are hitting the right stick first and then the left stick which is incorrect. So that is the opposite direction even further than the double stop. The left stick should hit slightly before the right and should be a nice crisp flam sound.
