This is Bob Powell with Powell Show Goats in Brady, Texas. We are representing Expert Village today. We are going to talk about how to train a goat for stock shows. What you basically need to do to start off with is you are going to have a young goat. I like to start training them around 4 months. You put a halter on them which is what I have in my hand here. You can tie them to a fence for a little bit to get them used to the halter around their noise. They are going to jump. They are not going to be happy with this when they first get started so expect to see that. Once you get them trained, if you will leave them tied to a fence for 30 minutes to an hour and then go out there and take your lead rope, hold it like this, start kind of walking them around, you will have to pull them a little bit. You can reach back and make a goat go. Tug on his tail a little bit and he will pick up his pace. Once you get into the show ring with the goat, the judge is going to be expect to see you walk your goat like this with the goat following right along the side of you. When he gets ready to feel of him, you are going to take your hand, put it like this under the goat, pick up on the goat and push. Some judges will let you pick and push. You can see how this goat is pushing now and she was a grand champion in her show in 2004 so she knows the drill. Some judges will let you pick them up and some don't want you to pick them up. So that is going to be between you and the judge there. Pick him up, always keep your eye on the judge and they basically tell you what they want when you get in the arena. I hope this clip has helped you. Thank you for watching.
