How to Repair Vintage Clothing

Next, I'm going to talk about just a few ideas to do upkeep and alteration and maintenance on your vintage clothes because sometimes they're a bit fragile. Other than if you've just happen to be handy with sewing, hey that's great. You can do your own alterations. But I know sometimes people get like, gosh it's going to cost me more to dry clean or to repair this dress or purse or whatever. But if you really love the item, it's worth the upkeep and what not. One problem that I know a lot of women tend to find with the vintage items, the dresses and what not, in these days a lot of women have longer torsos and we're taller. So you might find something that if it's an over the strap dress, for example like this yellow one here, that once it goes on over the straps, the waistline comes up too high on your ribs and you can't zip it up right. So a quick idea that I do, to suggest and this happens to a lot of ladies, is depending on how brave you are I did this with this swimsuit here, is originally, it was meant to be an over the strap strap on the swimsuit. But when I did that, it was too tight and it came up too high on my ribs and it kind of hurt. So what you can do is just cut those straps so that you're able to bring it down to your natural waistline. You can tie it around your neck into a halter. It looks just as cute and it doesn't damage or fray your fabric by any means. That's something that I know a lot of women need to do when they have those over the strap vintage dresses just to make them adjust and to fit. But then other things to just keep on hand are just your basic little sewing repairs and what not. What's nice about a lot of vintage clothing is the integrity of them. They're made a lot better than modern day items. So you're not going to have anything that's too beat up, hopefully. A lot of things are double lined and what not. But before you put something on and before your wear it, make sure you give it a good once over and make sure that there are not any wears and tears. Because if you don't notice those things, you might take it out to wear for the night and a seam might start to tear. So maybe wear it for a little while around the house before you wear it out. Because that's when sometimes you're going to find those wears and tears on it that's going to need repairs before you wear it. So those are just some quick and easy tips to help maintain the integrity and the life span of your vintage clothing.
