How to Shape a Flower Arrangement

Hi I'm Kelley Johnson with K Nicole Redesign for Expert Village. We’re going to go back later, after we've placed all the stems and do some shaping. Shaping is where you bend some of the stems, the wire stems, so that it gives a natural fold to each of the flowers. It'll look pretty artificial if everything is very straight, so see how I'm bending here. In nature you find that flowers are not straight up and down usually, unless we're talking about tulips. So we want to give some natural shape to our arrangement. And we'll work on that a little bit more towards the end. So after you have all of your flowers placed, it's not time to put the finishing touches on your flower arrangement. Some of that is involved with doing some bending that I mentioned earlier because we're trying to give it a natural feel even though we're using silk flowers. So here's an example, instead of this being straight, we want to bend slightly to give a little arch to make it look more natural. The other thing you want to check towards the very end, after you've placed all of your stems. You'll want to make sure that your foam is covered underneath. And there's a little trick you can use to do that. You're going to have greenery left over at the end so you can always take one of your leaves and stick it in your foam to cover the foam at the very end. So that's one trick you can use at the end of your arrangement to cover your foam. After you've done your bending and you've made sure that your foam is covered, here's the finished product!
