Parts of a Snow Ski

Hi! This Is Dave Smith with Hillcrest Ski and Sports in Gresham, Oregon on behalf of Expert Village. In this tutorial we will cover beginning skiing. In this clip, we'll cover how to identify the parts of your ski. The front of your ski is called the tip. It's turned up so that as you're moving forward your ski doesn't catch and cause you to fall over. The back of your ski i called the tail. It may or not be turned up. Let's take a look at the bottom of your ski. The main surface of the bottom of your ski is called the base. This is made of a material called p-tex, which is a wax with a high melting point. This is the part of the ski that's responsible for you sliding on the snow. On the sides of your base you have metal edges. These are generally made of steel. They help you control while on the hill and give you grip on the snow. Back on top of your ski we have the binding, which is responsible for connecting the ski to your foot. The front of your binding is called the toe piece. The back of your binding is called the heel piece. Your binding also comes equipped with a brake, which will help prevent run away skis. When your boot comes out of the ski, the brake will drop so that the ski can no long slide.
