Choosing Ski Equipment

Hi! This is Dave Smith with Hillcrest Ski and Sports in Gresham, Oregon on behalf of Expert Village. In this tutorial, we will cover beginning skiing. In this clip, we'll cover how to properly size ski poles, ski boots, and helmet. This is a ski pole. It's generally made out aluminum. However, it can be also made out of a composite material. The ski pole has a grip, a strap, and a basket, which will prevent your pole from continuing to deep snow. To properly size a ski pole, flip it upside down, grab beneath the basket, and set it on the ground beside you. A properly fitting pole should create a right angle between your forearm and your bicep. This pole will be a good size for me. This is a ski boot. A ski boot is very rigid on the outside of the boot to help you control your skis. It has a softer inner liner to make it comfortable on your foot. You also will generally have a series of buckles, which will help you decide how tight you want the boot to fit. A properly fitting ski boot should be more snug than a tennis shoe. When you put your foot into the boot and buckle it, you want to feel your toe against the end of the boot when you knee is straight. When you flex your knee over the ball of your foot, you want your toes to move back slightly off the end of the boot. Boots also break in over time, so you want something that's a little more snug at first because it's going to get roomier. Most people feel like a properly fitting ski boot is a little bit too small. A smaller boot will help you control your skis better so it's not a bad thing as long as you're still comfortable. Helmets have become much more popular at the mountain in recent years. To select a properly fitting helmet. Once buckled, a properly fitting helmet should not slosh around on your head when you move it side to side. Also, it should move your forehead slightly when you rock it front to back. You want something that's slightly snug but comfortable. Many helmets have features such as removable earpieces and vents for better air flow so that you can adjust it's conditions.
