Safety Tips for Traveling in the African Wilderness

Jambo, that means hello and you'll definitely want to know that if you're traveling to Africa. My name is Melissa Schenk on behalf of Expert Village. Today we're going to talk about some things that you'll want to know before traveling to Africa and also how to survive in the African Wilderness. In this clip I just want to offer a few more travelers safety tips for being out in the wilderness especially in Africa. Personal safety for travelers doesn't have to be a problem if you follow some basic rules. Now we're talking about the African Wilderness, you don't want to venture out on your own especially in the game parks, because wild animals they're called wild for a reason. They are dangerous and they're not meant to be played with or really approached, they're meant to be enjoyed from a far unless you know what you're doing with them. You definitely do want to keep your distance from them especially if you are setting up camp in the wilderness. I wouldn't recommend walking alone downtown or in any of the deserted cities, suburbs at night especially if you look like a tourist you don't want to stand out. So I would recommend especially you're not going to wear your flashy jewelry, leave all of your jewelry at home. Just take the bare necessities, take what you need and think about clothing that would make you blend in, not only into a community in Africa but in towards the forest as well. So darker colors thinking about brown and khakis colors, white, white will keep you cooler but you want to try to blend in and not stick out. My hair is blond so I always took a hat with me too because you don't find many blonds in Africa, so I stuck out just a little bit while I was there. So some important things to think about while you're there and of course don't be shy to take advice from locals on what sort of behavior should be avoided. You don't want to visit pour areas especially unless you're going with a group of people and unless you're going with someone that can at least communicate with those people too because you're not going to know those languages. It's much like when someone comes to Canada or the United States, they might not know English. You're not going to know their languages and the languages do change in very small parts of the communities, just very small kilometers apart. There is a completely different dialect in the different language. Of course too don't be carrying large sums of money with you and as I mentioned flashy jewelry with you. Make friends when you're there but you don't want to be hitch hiking or doing things too that you normally wouldn't do of course even when you're at home.
